India dismantled Zimbabwe by seven wickets in the first T20 of the three-match series on Thursday. The visitors chased down a 126-run target in 13.2 overs.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi dictated the chase from the start. The 15-year-old hammered an 18-ball half-century.
Sooryavanshi smashed 50 runs off 19 balls—clearing the boundary ropes with four sixes and four boundaries. The innings erased his quiet international debut in England earlier this month. He fell to Richard Ngarava at third man right after the powerplay.
Abhishek Sharma struggled entirely at the opposite end. He managed just 1 run off 8 balls.
Sooryavanshi launched his assault in the second over against Ngarava. He executed a one-legged pull shot over deep square leg before backing away to punch a length ball over mid-off. Blessing Muzarabani suffered the same fate in the fifth over.
The teenager sent Muzarabani’s delivery 90 metres down the ground for a six. Ishan Kishan finished the chase with a quick 35 off 24 deliveries. Captain Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten on 28 off 24 balls.
This marks Iyer’s first win leading the national side. He had endured six consecutive losses during his first assignment across Ireland and England.
The groundwork for the victory was laid by Mayank Yadav’s sheer pace. He played his first match for India since October 2024.
Yadav removed Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett on the absolute first ball of the match. He bowled a hard length that straightened slightly to catch the outside edge. The on-field umpire rejected the appeal.
India immediately opted for DRS and secured the decision. Yadav underwent surgery last year following a stress fracture. He consistently crossed the 145 kmph mark on Thursday.
Extra pace rushed Dion Myers in the fifth over. Myers mistimed a pull shot and walked back for 6. Debutant Ashok Sharma leaked a couple of boundaries in his opening over but tightened his lines in the subsequent two overs to freeze the run flow.
Iyer won the toss and put the home side in to bat. Zimbabwe collapsed under immediate pressure.
The hosts crawled to 26 for three inside the powerplay. Zimbabwe skipper Sikandar Raza attempted a release shot against Shivam Dube in the eighth over. He holed out to deep square leg. Zimbabwe sank to 32 for four.
Ryan Burl dragged the innings forward with 26 off 35 balls. Wessly Madhevere added 38 off 34 deliveries. Tadiwanashe Marumani remained unbeaten on 27 off 20 balls.
Marumani targeted the cow corner region late in the innings to push the team total to 125 for seven. Ravi Bishnoi completed his quota with tight figures of one for 24. Bishnoi had previously recorded a disastrous comeback stint in the UK.
Sooryavanshi clearly understands the Harare surface. He blasted a 175-run knock off 80 balls at this exact venue during the U-19 World Cup final earlier this year.
