Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami led the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly in mourning on Tuesday, paying a heartfelt tribute to former Purola MLA Rajesh Juwantha. Describing his untimely passing as an “irreparable loss” to the state’s political and social fabric, the CM highlighted Juwantha’s unwavering commitment to the people of the hills.

The former legislator, who breathed his last on December 22, 2025, following a sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 48, was remembered as a vibrant leader who championed the cause of the marginalized.

A Legacy Rooted in Public Service

“Rajesh Juwantha ji didn’t just inherit a political legacy; he breathed life into it through grassroots work,” CM Dhami told the House while reflecting on the leader’s upbringing in Uttarkashi. Born on July 7, 1977, Juwantha hailed from a family deeply entrenched in the service of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

His father, the late Barfia Lal Juwantha, served as the Hill Development Minister in the UP government, while his mother, Shanti Juwantha, held the position of Chairperson of the Vikasnagar Municipal Council twice. This pedigree of leadership shaped Rajesh into a sensitive and grounded representative of the Purola constituency.

From Panchayat Member to the State Assembly

Juwantha’s journey wasn’t an overnight success but a steady climb through the democratic tiers of the state. He started his political innings as a Kshetra Panchayat member from 2002 to 2007, focusing on local development at the village level. This intense ground-level connect eventually propelled him to the Uttarakhand Assembly in 2007. During his tenure as an MLA, he stood out for his ability to articulate the grievances of his remote Himalayan constituency with remarkable clarity and grit on the floor of the House.

Champion of the Underprivileged

“He was a man who used his position to amplify the voices that often go unheard in the power corridors of Dehradun,” noted the Chief Minister. Between 2008 and 2010, Juwantha played a pivotal role as a member of the Committee on Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Vimukt Jatis.

His work in the Estimates Committee (2007-08) also showcased his technical grasp over governance and fiscal responsibility. Colleagues across party lines remember him today not just for his titles, but for a personality that remained simple, honest, and approachable despite his rising political stature.

For the people of Purola and the wider Uttarkashi district, Juwantha’s passing creates a void in leadership that understands the specific struggles of the mountain terrain. His career serves as a blueprint for how local leaders can transition from Panchayat roles to state policymaking without losing their “Pahadi” soul.

By honoring him in the Vidhan Sabha, the state government acknowledges the vital role that second-generation leaders play in maintaining the continuity of regional development and social justice.
